French restaurants and progressive modern cuisine have emerged as
leaders in a consumer-based survey that ranks the top 100 eateries in
Europe.
After weighing 70,000 reviews from 3,000 people on his site
Opinionated About Dining
(OAD), high profile blogger Steve Plotnicki -- whose dinner companions
have included British food critic Jay Rayner, celebrity chef Tom
Colicchio and Anthony Bourdain -- claims he's come up with an
authoritative ranking of the top restaurants in Europe.
At the top of the list is Spanish eatery
Quique Dacosta
named after its head chef and situated in Denia near Valencia. Like
more than half of the restaurants on the top 100 list, Quique Dacosta is
conceptual and modern in theme.
Menus are an expression of chef Dacosta's love of the region and his
personal interest in art, architecture and design, according to a
write-up in The World's 50 Best Restaurants
blog. Dishes, for instance, pay homage to Frank Gehry's Guggenheim, and Dacosta designed some of the restaurant furniture himself.
This season, the theme centers around Mediterranean flavors with tapas
courses like oyster and dew, and cuttlefish, lime, wasabi, and white
turnip pie.
Among Dacosta's fans: Spanish chef titan Ferran Adrià, who frequented
the restaurant after shuttering his legendary El Bulli eatery last year.
